2014 Competition Report

The David Lloyd Leisure Centre, Dudley, venue for the 2014 finalsIt was eventful year as far as the 2014 Family Championships was concerned.

While entries have been static for the past few years, a number of new names came on board to replace some old-timers who dropped off.

Despite that, some of the disciplines had some disappointing numbers, especially amongst the female categories.

In addition, the year saw an increase in the number of walkovers through injuries, while a few had to be awarded for not complying with the rules of play. A shame as it deprived others of competition.

The unavoidable change of Finals Weekend date did not help but it was out of the organisers hands.

The event, however, was concluded at the David Lloyd Leisure Centre in Dudley where the championships have now been played over the past seven years.

The Father & Son disciplines have again proved the most popular and with the reigning champions not defending their Open title, it looked almost certain that the two-time champions from Lancashire, Roger and Michael Ingham, would be in contention over the weekend.

Unfortunately they were forced to concede a walkover to Warwickshire’s Carl & Andrew Norton who suffered a loss to Simon & Olly Cull for a place in the semi-finals.

Father & Son Open - Nigel & Ricard Allingham and champions Carl & Andrew NortonAgain injury struck and the Norton’s replaced them as Lucky Losers and went all the way to defeat Nigel and Richard Allingham, conquerors of the much fancied Fulcher pairing in their semi-final, 6-2 6-2.

In the Father & Son 14&U championship. Hertfordshire’s Lee & Patrick Evans beat Andrew & Oliver Broadhurst, 6-4 6-3, but the match of the weekend was the Broadhurst’s semi-final victory over David & Haydn Bright – a three set cliff-hanger, which went the way of Oxfordshire pairing, 6-2 5-7 6-2, and might well have expended their physical resources for the final.

In the 10&U Father & Son, which doesn’t have a postal build up like the other championships and is played as a Round Robin tournament on the Saturday, six of the original nine entries competed with Rajiv & Rohan Johar coming through unbeaten to become champions, with George & Paul Fielding runners-up.

As mentioned, the Mother & Daughter championships were light on entries.

In the Open, Sue & Molly Wiltshire took the championships at the expense of Melanie & Nicola Jennings, and in the 14&U event, Sue Wiltshire with her other daughter, Jessie, was handed the championship when her opponents failed to turn up.

Mother & Daughter 10&U - Champions Julie & Chantall GriffithsThe 10&U event, which has only been played twice since 2007, attracted four entries but only two turned up so the title was settled with one match which Derbyshire’s Julie & Chantal Griffiths won against Hertfordshire’s Jenny Stokes & Samantha Broom.

And so to the Mixed disciplines where the Father & Daughter Open proved the most popular but, again, the entry was decimated somewhat by walkovers.

Warwickshire’s Paul & Nicola Jennings came through a tough three setter to beat Cheshire’s David & Jemma Bright, 4-6 6-7(4) 6-3, and a tight final was expected against the pair who were unbeaten over the last three years.

Unfortunately it was not to be as an illness prevented Charles & Lysette Fulcher from making the final so the Jennings emerged with the trophy.

Father & daughter 14&U Mark & Anna Thompson and champions Ravi & Medha IvaturaThe only final to go to three sets was the one played between Ravi & Medha Ivaturi and Londoners Mark and Anna Thompson for the Father & Daughter 14&U title, which the Ivaturi’s from Yorkshire, held their nerve to win, 7-6 3-6 6-2.

The Mother & Son Open was not played but the 14&U event saw Hertfordshire’s Jenny Stokes and Leo Broom defeat Oxfordshire’s Lucy & Sam Riseley, 6-3 6-2.

A major review of the event is now taking place which will see changes for the 2015 Championships, which will be announced as soon as possible.
